| *Taiwan Imports 240,371 Tons Ordinary Steel Scrap In Oct 04 |

Taiwan imported a total of 240,371 tons of ordinary steel scrap in October 2004 on a customs clearance basis, down 32.1% from 354,142 tons in the year before, according to preliminary Taiwanese trade statistics. In the breakdown by main sources, Japan accounted for 75,237 tons, up 2.1% from a year ago; the Philippines 64,654 tons, up 14.2%; Russia 55,841 tons, down 19.2%; Hong Kong 10,187 tons, down 20.2%; and Panama 6,883 tons, up 120.1%. In January-October 2004, Taiwan's customs cleared imports of ordinary steel scrap totaled nearly 2,855,000 tons, up 24.3% from the same 2003 period. Of the total, Japan provided 824,610 tons, up 19.0% from the corresponding 2003 period; Russia 749,119 tons, up 70.6%; the Philippines 588,310 tons, up 49.3%; the USA 181,444 tons, up 1.4%; and Hong Kong 156,396 tons, down 8.1%. |
