= Import volumes at Nanjing and Dalian doubles 2003 levels
  China's Customs Statistics-released data for iron ore imported into the country in January to November 2004 (by customhouses) show imports into the top seven ports exceeded 1.0 million tons (Mt) a month, each:

  1. Qingdao 52.30 Mt, up 34.5% over the level in the previous same period);
2. Ningbo 26.92 Mt, up 15.8%;
3. Tianjin 22.76 Mt, up 70.4%;
4. Shanghai19.25 Mt, up 19.0%;
5. Nanjing14.65 Mt, up 108.3%
6. Hangzhou11.98 Mt, up 11.6%;
7. Dalian11.05 Mt, up 114.4%

  In the previous eleven-month period, four ports of Qingdao, Ningbo, Tianjin and Shanghai alone imported in excess of 1.0 Mt a month, each.

  Another noticeable thing is that leveling of import shares has progressed when compared with last year. Namely, the shares at all major ports have fallen as: Qingdao (Shandong) remaining top at 27.9% but fallen by 1.1% from the previous same period, followed by Ningbo 14.4% (down 2.9%), Tianjin 12.2% (down 2.2%), Shanghai 10.3% (down 1.8%).

  By contrast, the shares at middle-standing ports have risen as: Nanjing 7.8% (up 2.6%), Dalian 5.9% (up 2.1%), Zhanjiang 4.3% (up 0.6%).
