China's Scrap Imports Total 950,000 Tons In August 05
China's customs cleared imports of ferrous scrap totaled 950,000 tons in August 2005, up 17.3% from a year ago, indicate preliminary Chinese trade statistics secured by the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. As a result, China's import volume of ferrous scrap topped the level of a year ago for three consecutive months.

In January-August 2005, China's customs cleared imports of ferrous scrap totaled 6,960,000 tons, down 3.7% from the same 2004 period. They amounted to an annualized level of 10.44 million tons.

Meanwhile, China's customs cleared imports of steel ingots and semis totaled 80,000 tons in August 2005, falling short of 100,000 tons for the first time in seven months. But they increased by 14% from a year ago. In January-August 2005, they amounted to 970,000 tons, down 72.7% from the same 2004 period.

By comparison, China's customs cleared exports of steel ingots and semis totaled 380,000 tons in August 2005. They hit a cumulative 5,840,000 tons in January-August 2005, up 167.0% from the corresponding 2004 period.
