| Japan's Fluorspar Imports To August 2005 Total 160,358 Tons |
| = Imports in August remain 10,167 tons only brought in from China |
|
According to the Trade Statistics for August 2005 released by Ministry of Finance Japan, 10,167 tons of metallurgical fluorspar at 97% or below CaF2 was imported at a unit import price of 19,023 yen per ton. As a result, imports in the period of January to August totaled 160,358 tons, up by 19,347 tons (13.7%) from 141,011 tons in the previous corresponding period. Metallurgical fluorspar is added as a flux for development of slags in the ironmaking process. A slight addition well serves to raise slag fluidity without affecting its basicity. Since the import sources are limited to China, Mexico, etc., studies are underway on the use of light-burnt dolomite, quick dolomite, calcium ferrite and borax as substitutes for this fluorspar. Acid-grade fluorspar at over 97% CaF2 imported exclusively from China is used by glassware producers, pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers of air conditioners for business use, etc. as coolant, abrasive, coating material and others. There were no record in the month of imports of ferruginous manganese ore used as a manganese additive in pig iron making process. |
