Taiwan imported a total of 270,000 tons of ordinary steel scrap in November 2005 on a customs clearance basis, down 46,000 tons or 14.4% from a year ago, according to preliminary Taiwanese trade statistics.
In the breakdown by main sources, Japan accounted for 104,000 tons, up 110.0 from a year ago; Russia 50,000 tons, down 16.6%; Hong Kong 37,000 tons, up 281.9%; the Philippines 34,000 tons, down 47.2%; and Panama 7,000 tons, up 45.6%.
In January-November 2005, Taiwan's customs cleared imports of ordinary steel scrap totaled 2,838,000 tons, down 333,000 tons or 10.5% from the same 2004 period. Of the total, Japan provided 797,000 tons, down 8.8%; Russia 779,000 tons, down 3.7%; the Philippines 475,000 tons, down 27.3%; Hong Kong 207,000 tons, up 24.7%; and the USA 139,000 tons, down 38.4%. As a result, the top five sources together accounted for 84.5% of the total. |
