Japan's Iron & Steel Exports Total 2,661,000 Tons In Dec 05
Japan's customs cleared exports of iron and steel products totaled 2,661,000 tons in December 2005, down 11.8% from a year ago (up 15.8% from a month ago), according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 2,061,000 tons, down 19.4% from a year ago. In Asia, China took 417,000 tons, down 24.6%; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 1,013,000 tons, down 14.7%; and ASEAN 613,0000 tons, down 23.3%.

In other areas, the USA accounted for 189,000 tons, up 54.6% from a year ago; the Middle East 140,000 tons, up 49.1%; and the European Union 38,000 tons, up 19.7%.

Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 537,000 tons in December 2005, down 23% from a year ago (down 11.0% from a month ago), indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 119,700 tons, down 52.7% from a year ago; Asian NIEs 285,000 tons, up 3.2%; the EU 10,800 tons, up 2.6%; and the USA 1,700 tons, up 3.6%.
