Japanese Crude Steel Production Projected To Total 27,941,000 Tons In Jan-Mar'06
Japan's steel companies plan to produce a total of 27,941,000 tons of crude steel in January-March 2006 or the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 (April 2005-March 20065), up 25,000 tons or 0.1% from what they put out a quarter ago, according to a Jan 30 announcement by the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI). The announcement is based on METI's hearings from the nation's various steel companies.

The planned production volume of crude steel is higher by 631,000 tons or 2.3% than METI's demand estimate of 27,310,000 tons for January-March 2006.

The following are what the nation's steel companies plan to manufacture in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005.

Ordinary steel products
Total production is projected at 19,492,000 tons, up 403,000 tons or 2.1% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 14,810,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, down 157,000 tons or 1.0% from a quarter ago, and the remaining 4,681,000 tons for export sales, up 435,000 tons or 10.2%.

H-beams, small bars
Total production is projected at 1,053,000 tons for H-beams, down 79,000 tons or 7.0% from actual production a quarter ago. Total production is projected at 2,631,000 tons for small bars, down 406,000 tons or 13.4% from actual production a quarter ago.

Specialty steel products
Total production is projected at 5,153,000 tons, up 198,000 tons or 4.0% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 3,814,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, up 21,000 tons or 0.6% from a quarter ago, and the remaining 1,339,000 tons for export sales, up 177,000 tons or 15.2%.
