Japanese Ship Plate Exports To China At $660 FOB For Oct Shipments
Japanese integrated steelmakers have worked out deals at US$660/ton FOB in their negotiations on exports of ship plates (heavy plates for shipbuilding) to China's various shipbuilding companies for October shipments, TEX Report learned Wednesday.

There are prospects that the Japanese steelmakers will negotiate export deals at prices beyond US$660/ton FOB when they get ship plate inquiries from China next time in tight supply-demand conditions for ship plates across Asia, according to market sources.

In China, Wuhan Iron & Steel Group Corp (Wisco) has reduced its domestic sales price of ship plates by Yn500/ton (US$63) for October shipments. But Wisco's ship plates are 2,500mm wide, an incomplete size for shipbuilding material. Besides, they differ from what the Japanese steelmakers provide as ship plates. Japanese ship plates measure 4,000mm or more in width. Meanwhile, Baoshan Iron & Steel Co (Baosteel) has raised its domestic sales price of ship plates by Yn100/ton (US$13) for October shipments.

In China, it is Baosteel and two other steel companies that are capable of producing heavy plates in wide sizes as ship plates. The other two are Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corp and Wuyang Iron & Steel Co. At present, tight supply-demand conditions are reported for heavy plates from the three steelmakers. As a result, local shipbuilding companies are eager to make inquiries for ship plate imports from Japan so that they can complement what they require as shipbuilding material.
