Japanese Crude Steel Production In Dec 06: 10,050,000 Tons
CY 2006 Production Totals 116.2M Tons For Third Highest Level
Japanese crude steel production totaled 10,050,000 tons in December 2006, up 44,000 tons or 0.4% from a month ago (up 10.6% from a year ago), hitting a level of 10 million tons for three consecutive months, according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. As a result, Japanese crude steel production totaled 116,219,000 tons in calendar 2006, a third highest level after 119,320,000 tons in calendar 1973 and 117,130,000 tons in calendar 1974.

The following are details.

<>Crude Steel: Production totaled 30,159,000 tons in October-December 2006, up 8.1% from the same 2005 period. Production totaled 116,219,000 tons in calendar 2006, up 3,748,000 tons or 3.3% from a year ago.

<>Breakdown: Of production in December 2006, LD converters accounted for 7,481,000 tons, up 2.6% from month ago (up 12.9% from a year ago). Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) made up 2,569,000 tons, down 5.4% (up 4.3%). For calendar 2006, LD converters produced 85,965,000 tons, up 2.8% from calendar 2005, while EAFs brought 30,254,000 tons, up 4.9%.

<>Blast Furnace Pig Iron: Production totaled 7,303,000 tons in December 2006, up 186,000 tons or 2.6% from a month ago (up 9.1% from a year ago). Production totaled 21,745,000 tons in October-December 2006, up 6.3% from the same 2005 period. Production in calendar 2006 totaled 84,270,000 tons, up 1,212,000 tons or 1.5% from a year ago.

<>HR Steel Products: production totaled 8,911,000 tons in December 2006, up 15,000 tons or 0.2% from a month ago (up 11.3% from a year ago). Of the total, ordinary steel products accounted for 7,158,000 tons, up 4,000 tons or 0.1% from a month ago (up 13.2% from a year ago), and specialty steel products 1,753,000 tons, up 10,000 tons or 0.6% (up 4.3%). In calendar 2006, production totaled 104,112,000 tons, up 2.9% from a year ago.
