|Australian HIsmelt's Hot Metal Production In Jan - Mar / 07|
According to the operational results for January to March 2007 recently announced by Rio Tinto, 21,000 tons of pig iron were produced during the period at the HIsmelt plant being operated in Kwinana, Western Australia by HIsmelt (Operations) Pty, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto's 100% owned HIsmelt Corp Pty. This output represented an increase of 17,000 tons over, or 5.25 times the level in the previous corresponding period which was 4,000 tons. |
The plant produces hot metal by blowing iron ore fines and non-coking coals directly into molten metal to realize high-speed reduction. Advantageously the process bypasses coke oven process and allows use of high-phosphorous iron ore which is unfit for blast furnace.
The HIsmelt Kwinana Joint Venture is owned 60% by HIsmelt Corp Pty, 25% by US Nucor Corp, 10% Mitsubishi Corp and 5% Shougang Corp.
Production in January to December 2006 totaled 89,000 tons.
HIsmelt Corp Pty is the developer and promoter of the HIsmelt process, as well as the 60% owner of the Joint Venture. HIsmelt (Operations) Pty is in charge of operation and maintenance of the HIsmelt facility owned by the Joint Venture.
