|Chrome Mines / Turkey Are Viewed To Expand Its Production|
|= From Report By Eti Krom At ICDA Conference|
Let us view a summary of the chrome industry in Turkey. At the Annual Conference held by ICDA (The International Chrome Development Association) at Paris in May of this year, Mr. Robert Yuksel Yildirim, President and CEO of Eti Krom as a leading chrome enterprise in Turkey belonging to the Yildirim Group, explained about the chrome situation in Turkey and also the projects to expand the facilities at their chrome mines and ferro-chrome plants.|
Turkey shared 8% of the world production of chrome ore in 2007 and also shared 30% of the exports of chrome ore to the world market in 2007. In particular, Turkey is the largest county in the world to produce high grade chrome ore with Cr2O3 44 - 48% and has maintained the first position of exporting high grade chrome ore since 2005. Turkey played the important role of importing chrome ore into China. The speech delivered by Mr. Yildirim at the Conference is summarized as follows ;
(1)Production of chrome ore = Turkey produced 1,800,000 tons of chrome ore in 2007 and the quantities of chrome ore produced by main mines in 2007 were <> Eti Krom : 700,000 tons (shared 39% of the whole production), <> Cevikler : 250,000 tons (shared 14%), <> Dedeman : 160,000 tons (shared 9%) and <> other mines : 690,000 tons (shared 38%). Turkey is expected to produce 2,000,000 tons of chrome ore in 2008 with an increase of 200,000 tons per annum from that in 2007. This increase of the production in 2008 is due to mainly the output of chrome ore at other mines, sharing 43% of the whole production. Dedeman, as one of main mines, is anticipated to increase their production of chrome ore in 2008 by 20,000 tons per annum.
(2)Exports of chrome ore = Turkey exported 1,410,000 tons of chrome ore in 2007 and the quantities of chrome ore exported by main mines in 2007 were <> Eti Krom : 260,000 tons (shared 18% of the whole export), <> Cevikler : 350,000 tons (shared 25%), <> Dedeman : 250,000 tons (shared 18%) and <> other mines : 550,000 tons (shared 39%). Turkey is forecasted to expand their exports of chrome ore to 2,200,000 tons per annum in 2008. In consequence of that Eti Krom has taken over in February of 2008 Vargon Alloys of Sweden, the map to export chrome ore by Eti Krom is going to change to a remarkable extent. Therefore, Eti Krom is scheduled to increase their exports of chrome ore in 2008 to 900,000 tons per annum, sharing 41% of the whole export from Turkey.
The quantities of chrome ore exported from Turkey to main countries in 2007 were <> for China : 1,128,000 tons (shared 80% of the whole export), <> for Russia : 144,000 tons (shared 10%), <> for Sweden : 65,000 tons (shared 5%), <> for Germany : 27,000 tons (shared 2%) and <> other countries : 46,000 tons (shared 3%). Turkey will continue in 2008 to attach an importance to the Chinese market for chrome ore, following the same in 2007, and has planned to export 1,400,000 tons of chrome ore for China in 2008. Also, Turkey is anticipated to export 360,000 tons of chrome ore for Sweden and 350,000 tons for Russia in 2008, both of which have substantial increases compared with those in 2007.
(3)Contents of chrome ore reserves =Turkey is one of major countries, having possessed enough chrome ore reserves in parallel with South Africa, Kazakhstan and India, and the contents of chrome reserves in Turkey are <> proven ore : 50 million tons, <> probable ore : 80 million tons and <> possible ore : 150 million tons. The deposits with about 250 million tons of low grade chrome ore (with Cr2O3 content of 5 - 6%) located in Karsanti region are excluded from the reserves as mentioned above. The location of each chrome mine in Turkey is as per the table attached hereto.
(4)Plans to expand the capacities at ferro-chrome producers = (4-1) The Yildirim Group (Eti Krom) is scheduled to expand the capacity for production of high carbon ferro-chrome to a scale of 380,000 tons per annum by 2010. This increased output of high carbon ferro-chrome comprises both quantities produced by Eti Krom and Vargon Alloys in Sweden. Also, the Yildirim Group has planned to materialize the project to produce high carbon ferro-chrome in China from 2010 on consignment base as a joint venture with Chinese enterprise., (4-2) Dedeman plans to increase their production of high carbon ferro-chrome to a scale of 100,000 tons per annum and, accordingly, Dedeman is thought to decrease their exports of chrome ore in the future., and (4-3) Both countries of India and Russia, where have been producing ferro-chrome, are now requiring to purchase chrome ore as raw material for their production of ferro-chrome and have an intention to increase their imports of chrome ore from Turkey in the near future.
(5)Plans by Eti Krom to increase production of chrome ore = (5-1) Eti Krom exported 260,000 tons of chrome ore and 53,000 tons of high carbon ferro-chrome in 2007., (5-2) Eti Krom is scheduled to produce 700,000 tons per annum of chrome ore in 2008 and plans to expand a scale of the ore production to 1,350,000 tons per annum in 2013. Also, Eti Krom has aimed to export 900,000 tons per annum of chrome ore from 2013. Eti Krom has possessed leasing and operating licenses of 14 chrome ore and one quartzite mines.
The current situation at each chrome mine of Eti Krom is <> 11 chrome ore mines are located in Elazig region with proven reserves of 15 million tons but expected reserves to be min. 20 million tons, <> 3 chrome ore mines are located in Adana and Hatay regions with known reserves of about 30 million tons, and <> Eti Krom will set up a new concentrating plant with a capacity of 200,000 tons per annum in Adana / Aladag region by the end of 2010.
