Japan's Iron & Steel Exports Total 3,276,000 Tons In July 08
Japan's customs cleared exports of iron and steel products totaled 3,276,000 tons in July 2008, up 7.8% from a year ago (up 1.4% from a month ago), when their values amounted to Y426,891 million, up 22.2% from a year ago (up 5.1% from a month ago), according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 2,726,000 tons, up 9.4% from a year ago. In Asia, China took 574,000 tons, up 14.6% from a year ago; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 1,249,000 tons, up 5.0%; and ASEAN 880,000 tons, up 15.0%.

In other areas, the USA accounted for 146,000 tons, up 5.9% from a year ago; the EU 85,000 tons, up 69.3%; the Middle East 85,000 tons, down 34.6%; and Russia 5,000 tons, down 58.7%.

Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 732,000 tons in July 2008, up 5.2% from a year ago (down 6.5% from a month ago), indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 198,000 tons, up 43.7% from a year ago; Asian NIEs 349,800 tons, up 21.5%; and the USA 1,600 tons, down 8.5%.
