China's July Steel Exports Total 7.24M Tons
Shipments To Mideast, EU Way Up From Month Ago

China's exports of steel mill products except ferroalloys, cast iron and secondary products totaled 7,249,000 tons in July 2008, up 43.7% or 2,204,000 tons from a month ago (up 9.1% from a year ago), when shipments to the Middle East and the EU increased considerably from a month ago, according to a survey by the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. The survey is based on announced data from China's General Administration of Customs.

The findings of the survey follow.

<>In the breakdown by main destinations, the Middle East accounted for 1,030,000 tons, up by a factor of 2.0 from a month ago; the EU27 nations 1,160,000 tons, up 77.3%; the USA 506,000 tons, up 58.1%; Oceania 75,000 tons, up 1.5%; and other areas such as Latin America and Africa 1,150,000 tons, up 75.0%.

<>In East Asia, South Korea took 1,686,000 tons, up 26.4% from a month ago; Taiwan 174,000 tons, up 17.7%; and Japan a flat 96,000 tons.

<>In the breakdown by main items, steel ingots/semis made up 235,000 tons, up by a factor of 10.7 from a month ago; bars 1,108,000 tons, up 45.6%; wire rods 696,000 tons, up 14.3%; heavy and medium plates 680,000 tons, up 52.5%; HR coils 991,000 tons, up 76.3%; CR sheets 407,000 tons, up 48.5%; galvanized sheets 316,000 tons, up 21.1%; tinplate 37,000 tons, up 37.0%; tubular products 992,000 tons, up 47.2%; and alloyed steel products 620,000 tons, up 36.3%.
