China's August Finished Steel Production Totals 47.8M Tons
China's manufacture of finished steel products totaled 47,800,000 tons in August 2008, down 6.3% from a month ago (down 0.2% from a year ago), when production from small and midsize steel mills accounted for 21,032,000 tons, down 8.9% from a month ago (down 10.3% from a year ago), according to announced data from the China Iron & Steel Association.

What small and midsize steel mills put out this time decreased by as much as 4,162,000 tons from their monthly production of 25,194,000 tons in June this year. As a result, it is understood that small and midsize steel mills came under a major influence from China's steel production cutbacks executed, mainly in Hebei province, during the Beijing Olympics.

Of the long products manufactured in August, bars accounted for 3,725,000 tons, down 13.9% from a month ago (down 6.0% from a year ago); small and midsize shapes 2,070,000 tons, down 20.1% (down 9.3%); wire rods 6,603,000 tons, down 7.8% (down 5.9%); and rebars 7,633,000 tons, down 2.1% (down 11.0%).

Of the sheet products manufactured then, HR sheets accounted for 469,000 tons, down 30.8% from a month ago (down 14.3% from a year ago); narrow HR coils 2,223,000 tons, down 23.8% (down 27.5%); wide HR coils 6,353,000 tons, down 5.3% (up 16.3%); HR coils in thin sizes 1,809,000 tons, up 3.0% (up 12.8%); CR sheets 1,519,000 tons, up 5.2% (up 7.1%); wide CR coils 1,536,000 tons, up 10.2% (up 19.1%); narrow CR coils 516,000 tons, up 6.6% (down 4.6%); electrical sheets 417,000 tons, down 0.1% (down 14.5%); and coated sheets 1,625,000 tons, down 2.3% (up 9.7%).

As to other products, August production volumes totaled 1,787,000 tons for heavy plates, up 0.9% from a month ago (up 23.5% from a year ago); 2,916,000 tons for medium plates, down 4.5% (up 7.5%); and 1,990,000 tons for welded pipes, down 4.7% (down 3.2%).

Meanwhile, China's pig iron production totaled 40,045,000 tons in August, down 4.6% from a month ago (down 1.5% from a year ago), when its crude steel production totaled 42,568,000 tons, down 5.2% from a month ago (up 1.3% from a year ago).
