Japan's Aug 08 Iron Ore Imports 11.08 Mt
= Amounting to 131.68 billion yen with unit import prices averaging 11,883 yen / ton =
According to the foreign trade statistics (preliminary) for August 2008 announced September 25 by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, iron ore imports into the country in the period turned out to be 11.082 million tons (Mt), down 1.479 Mt or 11.8% from the previous comparable period. Derived January to August imports totaled 92.955 Mt, which was 1.482 Mt or 1.6% higher than in the same period last year.

Iron ore imports in August amounted to 131,687 million yen. Unit import prices averaged 11,883 yen per ton, which was 1,140 yen higher than in the previous month when average unit price set the first 10,000-yen mark.

[Imports surplus of 324 billion yen reflects soaring resources prices]
Japan's foreign trade covering all goods and services in the month under review comprised exports of 7,055,897 million yen and imports of 7,379,902 million yen, resulting in an import surplus of 324,005 million yen. Import surplus has taken place for the first time in seven months. In terms of amount by commodities, crude and raw oil, coal and LNG significantly increased.
