| South Korea's Ferrous Scrap Supply-Demand Trends In 1981-2007 |

The attached table shows South Korea's ferrous scrap supply-demand trends in 1981-2007. South Korea's apparent ferrous scrap consumption totaled 29,386,000 tons in 2007, indicating an all-time high. It marked annual levels of 5,080,000 tons in 1981 and 10 million tons in 1989, and topped 20 million tons in total in 1997. It stood at a stable annual level of 20 million tons in and after 1999. As a result, it increased by a factor of 5.8 for 27 years. By comparison, South Korea's crude steel production totaled 51,517,000 tons in 2007, a growth by a factor of 4.8 for 27 years. South Korea's purchase volume of domestic ferrous scrap totaled 22,716,000 tons in 2007, indicating an all-time high. The purchase volume was 6.6 times as large as the level of 1981. South Korea's annual ferrous scrap imports hit a record 7,548,000 tons in 2004 and they averaged 6,610,000 tons for five years of 2003-2007. Meanwhile, the nation's annual ferrous scrap exports amounted to a level of 200,000-300,000 tons for the five years under review after an all-time high of 327,000 tons in 2003. |
