Japan's Sept Iron & Steel Exports Total 3,813,000 Tons
Japan's customs cleared exports of iron and steel products totaled

3,813,000 tons in September 2008, up 26.8% from a year ago (up 13.5% from a month ago), indicating the second largest level after a record 3,895,000 tons in March 2008, according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 3,299,000 tons, up 32.7% from a year ago. In Asia, China took 663,000 tons, up 32.5% from a year ago; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 1,336,000 tons, up 8.6%; and ASEAN 1,247,000 tons, up 71.8%.

In other areas, the USA accounted for 117,000 tons, up 23.9% from a year ago; the EU 53,000 tons, down 19.5%; and the Middle East 109,000 tons, down 16.9%.

Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 520,000 tons in September 2008, down 14.0% from a year ago (down 10.5% from a month ago), indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 109,900 tons, up 7.85 from a year ago; Asian NIEs 268,800 tons, down 8.1%; and the USA 2,400 tons, up 38.5%.
