Brazilian resources company Vale announced October 23 its operational results for the July to September quarter of 2008, indicating eight record in quarterly production: iron ore (85.9 million metric tons - Mt), pellets (12.2 Mt), nickel (72,400 metric tons), bauxite (3.2 Mt), alumina (1.3 Mt), aluminum (140,000 metric tons), cobalt (750 metric tons) and thermal coal (362,000 metric tons).
In terms of iron ore production by mine, Carajás produced 26.751 Mt, achieving annualized production of over 100 Mt. January to September production totaled 74.2 Mt, an increase of 73.3% from the previous corresponding period.
Production in the Southeastern System comprising Itabira, Mariana and Minas Centrais (Central Mines) increased 10.6% to 33.2 Mt. Output from Brucutu, part of the Minas Centrais, reached 7.8 Mt. Production at Fazenão was 3.3 Mt. The Southern System -- MBR and Minas do Oeste -- produced 23.0 Mt, dropping by 3.0% due to the lower production at Mar Azul mine. |
