Taiwan's ferrous scrap imports totaled 612,000 tons in August 2008, up 42.0% from a year ago, indicating a year-on-year increase for 13 consecutive months since August 2007, according to Taiwanese customs statistics made available in Tokyo.
In January-August 2008, Taiwan's ferrous scrap imports totaled 4,775,000 tons, up 41.2% from the same period of 2007, amounting to an annualized level of 7,160,000 tons, way up from a record 5,410,000 tons in total last year.
In the breakdown by main sources, the USA accounted for the largest quantity of 2,347,000 tons or 49.2% of the total, up 100.1% from the same period of 2007. Hong Kong ranked second at 473,000 tons or 9.9%, up 1.1%; Netherlands third at 229,000 tons or 4.8%, up 225.3%; China fourth at 224,000 tons or 4.7%, up 936.9%; and Philippines fifth at 180,000 tons or 3.8%, up 9.2%. |
