| Oct-Dec Japanese Crude Steel Output Projected At 30,211,000 Tons |
|
Japan's steel companies plan to produce a total of 30,211,000 tons of crude steel in October-December 2008 or in the third quarter of fiscal 2008 (April 2008-March 2009), down 227,000 tons or 0.7% from what they put out a quarter ago, according to an Oct 30 announcement by the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI). The announcement is based on METI's hearings from the nation's various steel companies. The planned production volume of crude steel is lower by 129,000 tons or 0.4% than METI's demand estimate of 30,340,000 tons for October-December 2008. Also, the planned production volume indicates a decrease of 666,000 tons or 2.2% from the definite production volume of 30,877,000 tons in October-December 2007. The following are the steel companies' production plans for the third quarter of fiscal 2008. <Ordinary steel products> Total production is projected at 20,255,000 tons, down 1,097,000 tons or 5.1% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 14,838,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, down 489,000 tons or 3.2% from a quarter ago, and the remaining 5,417,000 tons for export sales, down 587,000 tons or 9.8%. H-beams, small bars Total production is projected at 1,149,000 tons for H-beams, down 53,000 tons or 4.4% from actual production a quarter ago. Total production is projected at 2,584,000 tons for small bars, down 100,000 tons or 3.7% from actual production a quarter ago. <Specialty steel products> Total production is projected at 5,692,000 tons, down 54,000 ton or 0.9% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 4,125,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, up 22,000 tons or 0.5% from a quarter ago, and the remaining 1,567,000 tons of products for export sales, down 76,000 tons or 4.6%. METI describes the compiled results from its hearings this time as provisional data. For the main reason, METI expects the Japanese steel companies to continue reviews of their production plans as the world's financial uncertainties nowadays remain to affect the real economies of various nations including Japan. |
