| Kansai Tetsugen Gets 89,453 Tons Local Scrap In Oct 08 |

Japan's Osaka-based Kansai Tetsugen council of ferrous scrap dealers secured a total of 89,453 tons of locally available ferrous scrap in October 2008 for arrivals at member companies' captive yards in the Osaka area, down 1.9% from a year ago, indicating a year-on-year decrease for the first time in seven months, according to the council. Of the total, new production scrap accounted for 14,748 tons, up 0.8% from a year ago; turnings 8,441 tons, down 6.9%; and heavy scrap 66,264 tons, down 1.7%. Kansai Tetsugen's direct shipments of local ferrous scrap to steelmakers totaled 23,268 tons in October 2008, down 29.0% from a year ago. The council held in stock a total of 7,857 tons of local ferrous scrap at the end of October 2008, down 43.7% from a year ago. The stocked quantity decreased by 41.9% from a month ago. Meanwhile, the shiploading volume of ferrous scrap in the Osaka Bay area totaled 11,231 tons in October 2008, down 58.8% fro a year ago, when miscellaneous stuff made up the whole quantity, Kansai Tetsugen found in its survey. |
