|Nickel Production By Norilsk Nickel In Jul. - Sep. 2008|
|= Produced 75,000 Tons As Increased By 9% From That In Q2 / 08, Owing To Increases In Russia And Finland|
MMC Norilsk Nickel (Norilsk Nickel) , a leading material resources company in Russia, released on the 28th of November their production activities in July - September quarter of 2008 and in January - September of 2008. The quantities of nickel produced by each division of Norilsk Nickel in the periods as mentioned above were as per the table shown below.|
Namely, Norilsk Nickel produced 75,067 tons of nickel in the third quarter (July - September) of 2008, which had a slight increase of 217 tons from that (74,850 tons) in the same quarter of 2007 and also increased by 9.1% compared with that (68,835 tons) in the preceding quarter of April - June 2008. On the contrary to the output of nickel in April - June quarter of 2008, all divisions of Norilsk Nickel, excluding Tati Nickel in Southern Africa, increased their nickel production in July - September quarter of 2008.
The production activities of nickel at each division of Norilsk Nickel in July - September quarter of 2008 were as follows ;
(1) Polar and Kola Divisions in Russia produced 58,501 tons of saleable nickel in the quarter. Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant delivered nickel concentrate to Harjavalta refinery in Finland for test runs. The decrease in PGM (such as platinum) production in the third quarter and the first 9 months of 2008 is due to the scheduled maintenance and repair works at this metallurgical plant.
(2) The Tati Nickel and Nkomati operations in Southern Africa produced 5,849 tons in total of saleable nickel in line with production plans, which had a certain decrease of 1,012 tons from that (6,861 tons) in the previous quarter of April - June.
(3) The Lake Johnston, Waterloo and Black Swan operations in Western Australia produced 3,139 tons of saleable nickel in line with production plans. Owing to a gas explosion occurred at Veranus Island in June of this year, a trouble of gas supply and a shortage of sulfuric acid have still put a substantial influence on nickel production in Australia.
(4) The Harjavalta refinery in Finland produced 14,386 tons in total of refined nickel, consisting of 7,578 tons of own nickel and 6,808 tons of tolled nickel, and 6,808 tons of own nickel included Black Swan feed and Western Areas feed going through the Lake Johnston concentrator.
For a reference, the quantities of other metals produced by the divisions of Norilsk Nickel in July - September quarter of 2008 were (A) copper : 108,593 tons (increased by 4.3% from that in the previous quarter of April - June), (B) palladium : 686,000 ounces (decreased by 18.4% from that in the previous quarter) and (C) platinum : 157,000 ounces (decreased by 21.5% from that in the previous quarter).
The total quantity of saleable nickel produced by all divisions of Norilsk Nickel in January - September of 2008 came to 218,474 tons, having had a slight decrease of 0.6% from that (219,752 tons) in the same period of 2007, but it has to take a note that the total quantity as mentioned above has included the output by Black Swan and Cawse in Australia acquired in March of 2007 and that by LionOre in Canada taken over in June of 2008.
Also, the total quantity of 218,474 tons of saleable nickel produced by Norilsk Nickel in January - September of 2008 has included those produced in Finland, Australia and Southern Africa, in addition to the output by Polar and Kola Divisions in Russia, but excluded the production figures of Stillwater Mining Company in the USA.
