Vale Stops Operation Of Two More Pellet Plants
= Idled plants including Samarco's involve overall capacity of 29.3 Mt/a =
Brazilian resources company Vale announced December 8 that it has stopped the operations of two of its directly managed pellet plants located at the port of Tubarão in the sate of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The two plants have a total production capacity of 7.3 million metric tons per year (Mt/a).

The decision to curtail pellet production is accounted for by the unprecedented contraction of the global demand for iron ore and pellets. The stoppage of the plants follows the shutdown of two other Vale's pellet plants at the port of Tubarão since November 5, 2008. So four pellet plants have been suspended at Vale.

Samarco Mineração, which is a joint venture company with BHP Billiton operating in Ponta do Ubu, has also idled put two of its three pellet plants until mid January 2009.

The plants currently being suspended involve an overall total capacity of 29.3 Mt/a.
