| Japanese Integrateds' Export Talks With Japanese-Affiliated Electro Makers |
|
There are prospects that Japanese integrated steelmakers will see their export negotiations drag into next year on supplies of steel products to Japanese-affiliated consumer electronics manufacturers in Asian destinations, mainly in China, for shipments in the first half (January-June) of 2009. It is uncertain so far when serious supply negotiations will start between the two sides. The Japanese-affiliated consumer electronics companies have fallen into a more slack in what they sell since the beginning of December. As a result, their plant operations are described as 60% of normal levels. Besides, there are fears of the operations declining further. At the present juncture, they find it difficult to work out new plans for they produce, let alone new purchase plans for materials. Under the existing circumstances, coil centers in Thailand are faced with reduced operation rates. Also, local CR sheet manufacturers are forced to slash their production to around 20% of capacity. Aware of their customers' conditions, the Japanese steelmakers have no option but to watch how things go with no offers for shipments in the first half of 2009. |
