| Japanese Crude Steel Production In Nov'08: 8,811,000 Tons |

Japanese crude steel production totaled 8,811,000 tons in November 2008, down 1,285,000 tons or 12.7% from a month ago (down 12.9% from a year ago), according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. As a result, Japanese crude steel production hit a cumulative 111,251,000 tons in January-November 2008, up 1.3% from the same period of 2007. Of crude steel production in November 2008, LD converters accounted for 6,670,000 tons, down 12.7% from a month ago (down 10.4% from a year ago), while electric arc furnaces made up 2,141,000 tons, down 12.9% (down 20.0%). Japanese production of blast furnace pig iron totaled 6,542,000 tons in November 2008, down 748,000 tons or 10.3% from a month ago (down 8.7% from a year ago). It amounted to 80,055,000 tons in January-November 2008, up 0.9% from the same period of 2007. Japanese manufacture of HR steel products totaled 7,772,000 tons in November 2008, down 1,230,000 tons or 13.7% from a month ago (down 14.3% from a year ago). Of the total, ordinary steel products accounted for 6,164,000 tons, down 946,000 tons or 13.3% from a month ago (down 14.3% from a year ago), while specialty steel products made up 1,608,000 tons, down 284,000 tons or 15.0% (down 14.2%). |
