| Japan's Nov Iron & Steel Exports Total 2,405,000 Tons |

Exports Fall Short Of 2.5M Tons For First Time Since Jan'06 Japan's customs cleared exports of iron and steel products totaled 2,405,000 tons in November 2008, down 17.1% from a year ago (down 19.8% from a month ago), falling short of 3,000,000 tons for two consecutive months, when their values totaled Y329,221 million, up 3.7% from a year ago, according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance. Also, they fell short of 2,500,000 tons for the first time in two years and 10 months since January 2006 when totaled 2,260,000 tons. Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 1,970,000 tons, down 22.2% from a year ago. In Asia, China took 464,000 tons, down 9.4% from a year ago; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 791,000 tons, down 35.8%; and ASEAN 697,000 tons, down 5.2%. In other areas, the USA accounted for 90,000 tons, up 1.1% from a year ago; the EU 41,000 tons, up 30.6%; the Middle East 71,000 tons, down 6.7%; and Russia 13,000 tons, up 152.7%. Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 608,000 tons in November 2008, down 6.6% from a year ago (down 25.8% from a month ago), indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance. In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 135,000 tons, up 10.4% from a year ago; Asian NIEs 295,000 tons, down 15.5%; ASEAN 27,000 tons, up 103.9%; and Russia 44,000 tons, up 4.4%. |
