Japan's Iron & Steel Exports In Nov'08: 2,435,000 Tons
Japan's exports of iron and steel products totaled 2,435,000 tons in November 2008, down 16.9% from a year ago (down 18.8% from a month ago), indicating a low level since January 2006 when they totaled 2,266,000 tons, according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. The values of the exports totaled US$3,561.13 million, up 18.8% from a year ago. In terms of yen, the values amounted to Y348.7 billion, up 2.4% from a year ago.

Of the total exports, ordinary steel products accounted for 1,797,000 tons, down 9.2% from a year ago. Of the ordinary steel products exported, HR coils made up 400,000 tons, down 27.5% from a year ago; galvanized sheets 389,000 tons, down 4.3%; heavy plates 251,000 tons, down 10.8%; CR coils 226,000 tons, down 0.7%; shapes 56,000 tons, down 44.1%; wire rods 32,000 tons, down 9.5%; welded and butt-welded pipes 110,000 tons, up 41.5%; seamless pipes 87,000 tons, up 51.1%; electrical sheets 67,000 tons, up 2.7%; and bars 41,000 tons, up 28.1%.

In the breakdown of the total exports by main destinations, South Korea took 498,000 tons, down 41.5% from a year ago; China 470,000 tons, down 9.4%; Thailand 356,000 tons, down 6.4%; Taiwan 206,000 tons, down 23.2%; and the USA 96,000 tons, down 2.0%.
