| Chinese Ship Plate Export Talks On March-May Shipments To ROK |
|
China's several steelmakers such as Jiangsu Shagang Group Co Ltd have begun negotiations on their deals of ship plate exports to South Korea for March-May shipments, it was learned in Tokyo Thursday. Prices on offer are seen as a level of US$770-780/ton C&F. In this connection, there are forecasts that China's small and midsize steelmakers will force their way into ship plate exports to South Korea for March-May shipments as well, leading to a decline in Chinese prices of ship plate exports to South Korea. China's small and midsize steelmakers with heavy plate mills joined the nation's major integrated steelmakers in negotiations on ship plate exports to South Korea for the October-December quarter of last year. As a result, negotiated prices fell considerably for the quarter under review. Besides, South Korea's shipbuilding companies requested a price adjustment in agreed purchases of Chinese ship plates at a time when domestic prices of heavy plates were falling in China. Then, adjusted Chinese prices of December shipments were reported as a level of US$900/ton C&F for first-class ship plates from major integrated steelmakers and that of US$700/ton C&F for second-class ship plates from small and midsize steelmakers. Meanwhile, Japan's integrated steelmakers are expected to start their ship plate export negotiations next week on April-September shipments to South Korea. The Japanese steelmakers find it difficult to maintain the present price levels of US$1,200-1,300/ton FOB or Y140,000-150,000/ton FOB in the ship plate exports they negotiate anew with their Korean customers (major shipbuilding companies). Accordingly, it remains to be seen what price level will be agreed between the two sides on April-September shipments. |
