| Japan's Iron & Steel Exports Total 38,169,000 Tons In CY 2008 |

Japan's customs cleared exports of iron and steel products totaled 38,169,000 tons in calendar 2008, up 4.6% from a year ago, marking a new high beyond a record 37,035,000 tons in calendar 1976, according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance. Their values amounted to Y4,572,990 million, topping an all-time high of Y4,314.5 billion in calendar 2007. Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 31,941,000 tons, up 5.6% from a year ago. In Asia, China took 6,702,000 tons, up 6.8% from a year ago; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 14,404,000 tons, down 1.6%; and ASEAN 10,610,000 tons, up 19.2%. In other areas, the USA accounted for 1,524,000 tons, down 1.7% from a year ago; the EU 571,000 tons, up 21.8%; and the Middle East 1,161,000 tons, down 20.4%. Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 7,727,000 tons in calendar 2008, down 8.3% from a year ago, indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance. In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 1,764,000 tons, down 6.5% from a year ago, and Asian NIEs 3,583,000 tons, down 4.4%. |
