| Turkey's CY2008 Scrap Imports Total 17.41M Tons |

Turkey's ferrous scrap imports totaled 17,415,000 tons in calendar 2008, up 1.6% from a year ago, hitting a new high, according to Turkish customs statistics made available in Tokyo. In the breakdown by main sources, the USA ranked first at 5,045,000 tons or 29.0% of the total, up 27.7% from a year ago; Russia second at 2,206,000 tons or 12.7%, down 36.0%; the UK third at 1,823,000 tons or 10.5%, down 22.3%; Romania fourth at 1,431,000 tons or 8.2%, up 0.2%; and the Netherlands fifth at 1,117,000 tons or 6.4%, up 14.3%. Turkey's annual ferrous scrap imports were 12,818,000 tons in 2003; 12,776,000 tons in 2004; 13,316,000 tons in 2005; 15,074,000 tons in 2006; and 17,141,000 tons in 2007. Meanwhile, Turkey's crude steel production in January-November 2008 amounted to an annualized 26,410,000 tons. The annualized production level marked increases of 44.3% from 18,298,000 tons in 2003 and 29.0% from 20,478,000 tons in 2004. |
