|
Japan's steel companies plan to produce a total of 18,294,000 tons of crude steel in April-June 2009 or in the first quarter of fiscal 2009 (April 2009-March 2010), up 698,000 tons or 4.0% from what they put out a quarter ago, indicating the second lowest level of domestic crude steel production since the first quarter of fiscal 1968, according to a May 8 announcement by the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI). The announcement is based on METI's hearings from the nation's various steel companies. The planned production volume of crude steel is higher by 464,000 tons or 2.6% than METI's demand estimate of 17,830,000 tons for April-June 2009. Also, the planned production volume indicates a decrease of 12,766,000 tons or 41.1% from the definite production volume of 31,060,000 tons in April-June 2008. The following are the steel companies' production plans for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. <Ordinary steel products> Total production is projected at 12,890,000 tons, down 137,000 tons or 1.1% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 9,136,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, and the remaining 3,754,000 tons for export sales. H-beams, small bars Total production is projected at 688,000 tons for H-beams, up 79,000 tons or 12.9% from actual production a quarter ago. Total production is projected at 2,078,000 tons for small bars, up 136,000 tons or 7.0% from actual production a quarter ago. <Specialty steel products> Total production is projected at 2,735,000 tons, up 123,000 tons or 4.7% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 1,952,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, and the remaining 783,000 tons for export sales. |
