| Japan's April Iron & Steel Exports Total 2,133,000 Tons |

Japan's customs cleared exports of iron and steel products totaled 2,133,000 tons in April 2009, down 30.2% from a year ago (down 18.7% from a month ago), when their values totaled Y206.3 billion, down 1.7% from a year ago (down 28% from a month ago), according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance. Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 1,906,000 tons, down 27.4% from a year ago. In Asia, China took 490,000 tons, down 12.5% from a year ago; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 946,000 tons, down 23.4%; and ASEAN 389,000 tons, down 51.2%. In other areas, the USA accounted for 47,000 tons, down 46.3% from a year ago; the EU 15,000 tons, down 51.4%; and the Middle East 55,000 tons, down 18.8%. Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 289,000 tons in April 2009, down 64.0% from a year ago (down 3.6% from a month ago), indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance. In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 55,000 tons, down 65.0% from a year ago; Asian NIEs 169,700 tons, down 48.5%; and ASEAN 3,000 tons, down 70.3%. |
