Japan's May Iron & Steel Export Shipments: 2,161,000 Tons
Japan's export shipments of iron and steel products totaled 2,161,000 tons in May 2009, down 32.9% from a year ago (up 0.3% from a month ago), when their values totaled US$2,050.4 million, down 45.5% from a year ago, according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. In terms of yen, the values totaled Y200.3 billion, down 48.8% from a year ago.

Of the total export shipments, ordinary steel products accounted for 1,336,000 tons, down 40.6% from a year ago. Of the ordinary steel products exported, HR coils made up 417,000 tons, down 29.8% from a year ago; galvanized sheets 198,000 tons, down 55.7%; heavy plates 198,000 tons, down 27.5%; CR coils 185,000 tons, down 34.1%; shapes 54,000 tons, down 45.1%; bars 44,000 tons, down 43.3%; electrical sheets 46,000 tons, down 40.3%; seamless pipes 32,000 tons, down 48.8%; welded and butt-welded pipes 26,000 tons, down 82.5%; and wire rods 23,000 tons, down 38.7%.

In the breakdown of the total export shipments by main destinations, South Korea took 699,000 tons, down 14.8% from a year ago; China 462,000 tons, down 20.4%; Taiwan 226,000 tons, down 29.6%; Thailand 100,000 tons, down 75.6%; and the USA 59,000 tons, down 60.2%.
