| Japan's Steel Industry Takes 1,429,000 Tons Local Scrap In April'09 |

Japan's steel industry bought a total of 1,429,000 tons of locally available ferrous scrap in April 2009, down 55.7% from a year ago, according to monthly statistics from the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry. Of the total, carbon steel scrap accounted for 1,350,000 tons, down 55.7% from a year ago; alloy steel scrap 39,000 tons, down 64.2%; and pig iron scrap 40,000 tons, down 43.7%. Of home arisings in April 2009, carbon steel scrap accounted for 547,000 tons, down 40.0% from a year ago; alloy steel scrap 68,000 tons, down 48.9%; and pig iron scrap 26,000 tons, down 29.7%. The Japanese steel industry consumed a total of 2,084,000 tons of ferrous scrap for steelmaking in April 2009, down 47.0% from a year ago. In the breakdown by steelmaking furnaces, LD converters consumed 493,000 tons of carbon steel scrap, down 55.6% from a year ago; 28,000 tons of alloy steel scrap, down 40.4%; and 20,000 tons of pig iron scrap, down 47.4%. Electric arc furnaces consumed 1,401,000 tons of carbon steel scrap, down 43.3% from a year ago; 99,000 tons of alloy steel scrap, down 49.2%; and 43,000 tons of pig iron scrap, down 35.8%. At the end of April 2009, ferrous scrap stocks at domestic steelworks totaled 3,735,000 tons as carbon steel scrap, up 38.4% from a year ago; 380,000 tons as alloy steel scrap, up 17.3%; and 244,000 tons as pig iron scrap, down 8.3%. |
