July-Sept Japanese Crude Steel Output Projected At 23,073,000 Tons
Japan's steel companies plan to produce a total of 23,073,000 tons of crude steel in July-September 2009 or in the second quarter of fiscal 2009 (April 2009-March 2010), up 3,976,000 tons or 20.8% from what they put out a quarter ago, according to a July 30 announcement by the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI). The announcement is based on METI's hearings from the nation's various steel companies.

The planned production volume of crude steel is higher by 1,303,000 tons or 6.0% than METI's demand estimate of 21,770,000 tons for July-September 2009. Also, the planned production volume indicates a decrease of 7,375,000 tons or 24.2% from the definite production volume of 30,448,000 tons in July-September 2008.

The following are the steel companies' production plans for the second quarter of fiscal 2009.

<Ordinary steel products>
Total production is projected at 16,366,000 tons, up 2,899,000 tons or 21.5% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 10,492,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, and the remaining 5,874,000 tons for export sales.

H-beams, small bars
Total production is projected at 842,000 tons for H-beams, up 100,000 tons or 13.5% from actual production a quarter ago. Total production is projected at 2,111,000 tons for small bars, down 98,000 tons or 4.4% from actual production a quarter ago.

<Specialty steel products>
Total production is projected at 3,547,000 tons, up 829,000 tons or 30.5% from actual production a quarter ago. Of the projected total, the first 2,464,000 tons of products are intended for domestic shipments, and the remaining 1,083,000 tons for export sales.
