China's 1H09 Trade In Steel Products, Raw Materials
According to China's Customs Statistics for foreign trade in ferrous raw materials and steel products for the first half of 2009 announced by the country's Customs General Administration, trading configuration has seen some changes as: exports of coke, steel ingots and semi-finished products, and steel products all plunged, while imports of steel products surged. These would show signs of increasing demand in the domestic markets.

Exports of steel products that reached 62.65 million tons (Mt) in 2007 and 59.23 Mt in 2008 remained 9.34 Mt only as at the end of June, or annually 18.6 Mt alone.

In terms of imports, iron ore, steel ingots and semi-finished products increased, in particular semi-finished products that expanded 25 times the previous comparable level. This also would indicate a change in the demand environment.

During the six month period, iron ore imports ran at a monthly rate in excess of 50 Mt, with cumulative six month imports approximating 300 Mt at 297 Mt, or annually almost 600 Mt, a vigorous volume.
