China's Shougang Jingtang Phase I Project Formally Begins Operation
= 9.7 Mt/a of pig iron output scheduled for 2010 =
China's Shougang Group has formally commenced operation of its 51% owned Shougang Jingtang Phase I Project that has been constructed on Caofeidian island, Zhu Jimin, Chairman of the Company announced at the party held September 2 to celebrate the Company's 90th anniversary of foundation. According to the relevant information, crude steel production of the Company will reach a total of 30 million tons per annum (Mt/a) by 2012.

The Shougang Jingtang No. 1 blast furnace (inner volume: 5,500 m3) that makes an integral part of the Phase I Project was kindled in October last year, but full-scale operation has been postponed by nearly one year taking into consideration sluggish steel demand in the country. No. 1 furnace will have a pig iron production capacity of 4.85 Mt. With the completion of subsequent No. 2 furnace, which will have the same capacity as No. 1, pig iron output capacity at Shougang Jingtang steelworks will total 9.7 Mt/a by 2010.

Caofeidian island that faces the coast of Bohai Bay is an artificial island made by reclaiming the offshore of Tangshan city. An integrated steelworks is being constructed at an area of the island with a capital investment of 51% by Shougang and 49% by Tangshan Iron and Steel. A total capital of RMB 67,731 million was expended on the implementation of Phase I Project.
