|
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd ("K" Line) announced September 9 the completion of its third 300,000-dwt class ore carrier "RIGEL" at Ariake Shipyard of Universal Shipbuilding Corp. The new vessel is a Very Large Ore Carrier ("VLOC") assigned to carry cargoes loaded in Brazil to Italian steel company ILVA S.p.A. Shuttle operation between the deep draft berth of ILVA in the port of Taranto and major Brazilian ports by assigning a very large vessel like the "RIGEL" is expected to allow achievement of efficient transportation. The vessel is of the so-called "Unimax Ore", a revolutionary 300,000-dwt type ore carrier that has the versatility to enter major iron ore loading ports, while focusing on deepwater ports in Brazil, one of the largest places of iron ore export shipment. Most advanced technology has been incorporated onto the "RIGEL" ensuring she may fully satisfy customer demand. For example, each cargo hold is equipped with the world's largest single panel hatch cover that enables efficient cargo handling. She is also equipped with energy saving devices developed by Universal Shipbuilding Corp that allows dramatically improved propulsive performance and fuel consumption. The vessel, built to fly the flag of the Rising Sun and mainly crossing the Atlantic Ocean, is expected to play an initiative role to improve the education and training system for Japanese seafarers, thereby contributing to globalization of the Japanese shipping industry further. The vessel is the largest ore carrier ever devoted by "K" Line to ILVA.
