| Kansai Tetsugen Gets 62,286 Tons Local Scrap In August |

Japan's Osaka-based Kansai Tetsugen council of ferrous scrap dealers secured a total of 62,286 tons of locally available ferrous scrap in August 2009 for arrivals at member companies' captive yards in the Osaka area, down 26% from a year ago, when the arrivals fell by 4,477 tons or 7% from a month ago, according to the council. Of the total, Shindachi (new production scrap) accounted for 9,578 tons, down 25% from a year ago; turnings 4,120 tons, down 48%; and heavy scrap 48,588 tons, down 23%. Kansai Tetsugen's direct shipments of local ferrous scrap to steelmakers totaled 25,736 tons in August 2009, down 7% from a year ago. The council members held in stock a total of 11,161 tons of local ferrous scrap at the end of August 2009, up 15% from a year ago. The stocked quantity decreased by 2,518 tons or 18% from a month ago. Meanwhile, the shiploading volume of ferrous scrap in the Osaka Bay area totaled 15,719 tons in August 2009, up 49% from a year ago, indicates a Kansai Tetsugen survey. Of the total, heavy scrap accounted for 5,147 tons, up 94% from a year ago, and miscellaneous ferrous stuff 10,572 tons, up 33%. |
