A new monthly record of cargo throughput was set at 5.456 million tons (Mt) in August at Baoshan Iron & Steel's ore center on Majishan Island in the Zhoushan Archipelago, Baogang Daily News has reported. Despite the passing by of a large typhoon and repair work involved in Shengsi power network, which reduced operational period to 23 days only, the port achieved this record.
The Majishan ore center is the largest of this kind in Asia. The Zhoushan Archipelago is located some 60 nautical miles (110 km) from Shanghai Wusongkou, and about 80 nautical miles (148 km) from Baosteel's raw materials handling wharf. Besides Baoshan Iron and Steel, the center is providing services, as an iron ore transhipment port, for other steelmakers located along the coasts of Yangtze River. |
