Japan's August Scrap Exports Total 730,000 Tons
Japan's ferrous scrap exports totaled 730,000 tons in August 2009, up 161.6% from a year ago, indicating a year-on-year increase for nine consecutive months, but they decreased for three consecutive months after their peak in May 2009, according to announced customs statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

Of the total, China took the largest quantity of 345,000 tons as the top destination for three consecutive month, and South Korea the second largest of 334,000 tons, up 89,000 tons from a month ago, marking a year-on-year increase for the first time in two months.

In January-August 2009, Japan's ferrous scrap exports totaled 7,146,000 tons, up 80.1% from the same period of 2008, standing close to a record 7,650,000 tons in calendar 2006, when they translated into an annualized level of 10,720,000 tons.

In the breakdown by main destinations, China ranked first at 3,929,000 tons or 55.0% of the total, up 128.7% from the same period of 2008; and South Korea second at 2,672,000 tons or 37.4%, up 38.4%. As a result, the two nations together accounted for 92.4% of the total.
