Japan's export shipments of iron and steel products totaled 3,410,000 tons in August 2009, up 3.4% from a year ago (up 6.3% from a month ago), when their values totaled US$2,780.89 million, down 34.2% from a year ago (down 1.2% from a month ago), according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. In terms of yen, the values totaled Y264.2 billion, down 42.2% from a year ago (down 1.3% from a month ago).
Of the total export shipments, ordinary steel products accounted for 2,230,000 tons, down 2.5% from a year ago. Of the ordinary steel products exported, HR coils made up 852,000 tons, up 38.1% from a year ago; galvanized sheets 344,000 tons, down 27.7%; heavy plates 335,000 tons, up 26.3%; CR coils 275,000 tons, up 2.8%; shapes 71,000 tons, down 22.9%; electrical sheets 59,000 tons, down 15.7%; wire rods 37,000 tons, up 12.1%; bars 36,000 tons, down 44.3%; welded and butt-welded pipes 31,000 tons, down 79.9%; and seamless pipes 26,000 tons, down 65.2%.
In the breakdown of the total export shipments by main destinations, South Korea took 920,000 tons, up 16.4% from a year ago; China 624,000 tons, up 9.5%; Taiwan 358,000 tons, up 20.7%; Thailand 294,000 tons, down 27.6%; and the USA 90,000 tons, down 26.6%. |
