| Japan's Sept Crude Steel Production: 8,270,000 Tons |

Japanese crude steel production totaled 8,270,000 tons in September 2009, down 37,000 tons or 0.4% from a month ago (down 18.0% from a year ago), according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. As a result, Japanese crude steel production hit a cumulative 43,331,000 tons, down 29.6% from the same period of 2008, a low level since 40,970,000 tons in the corresponding period of 1969. Of crude steel production in September 2009, LD converters accounted for 6,442,000 tons, down 2.5% from a month ago (down 15.0% from a year ago), while electric arc furnaces made up 1,829,000 tons, up 7.4% (down 27.0%). Japanese production of blast furnace pig iron totaled 6,049,000 tons in September 2009, down 191,000 tons or 3.1% from a month ago (down 17.0% from a year ago). It amounted to 32,333,000 tons in April-September 2009, down 26.6% from the same period of 2008. Japanese manufacture of HR steel products totaled 7,328,000 tons in September 2009, up 35,000 tons or 0.5% from a month ago (down 20.5% from a year ago). Of the total, ordinary steel products accounted for 6,014,000 tons, down 47,000 tons or 0.8% from a month ago (down 17.9% from a year ago), while specialty steel products made up 1,313,000 tons, up 82,000 tons or 6.7% (down 30.6%). |
