Japan's Apr-Sep Iron & Steel Exports Total 13,590,000 Tons
2009, down 31.5% from the same period of 2008, according to preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

Among main destinations, Asia accounted for 11,457,000 tons, down 31.3% from the same period of 2008. In Asia, China took 2,786,000 tons, down 18.5%; NIEs (newly industrializing economies) 5,776,000 tons, down 26.8%; and ASEAN 2,621,000 tons, down 50.3%.

In other areas, the USA accounted for 540,000 tons, down 32.9%; the EU 138,000 tons, down 50.6%; the Middle East 411,000 tons, down 33.8%; and Russia 15,000 tons, down 71.5%.

Meanwhile, Japan's customs cleared imports of iron and steel products totaled 1,793,000 tons in April-September 2009, down 54.5% from the same period of 2008, indicate preliminary trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

In the breakdown by main sources, China supplied 295,000 tons, down 67.6% from the corresponding period of 2008; Asian NIEs 999,000 tons, down 44.3%; ASEAN 21,000 tons, down 62.6%; and the USA 3,900 tons, down 65.4%.
