Japan's End Sept Ordinary Steel Stocks Total 5,578,000 Tons
Japan's ordinary steel stocks held by steelmakers and wholesalers totaled 5,578,000 tons at the end of September 2009, down 257,000 tons or 4.4% from a month ago, when the nation's inventory-shipment ratio of ordinary steel products stood at 90.1%, down from 103.3% in the month before, coming short of 100% for the first time in 11 months since October 2008, according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation.

Of the total, steelmakers accounted for the first 4,367,000 tons, down 250,000 tons or 5.4% from a month ago, and wholesalers the remaining 1,210,000 tons, down 7,000 tons or 0.6%. In the breakdown by allocation, stocks for domestic sales totaled 4,622,000 tons, down 37,000 tons or 0.8% from a month ago, while those for export shipments totaled 955,000 tons, down 220,000 tons or 18.7%.

Among items in decreased stocks by 10,000 tons or more from a month ago, HR coils (600mm wide or wider) fell by 140,000 tons to 1,426,000 tons; flat products (heavy/medium plates and sheet products) by 39,000 tons to 609,000 tons; CR electrical sheets by 27,000 tons to 75,000 tons; CR coils by 23,000 tons to 528,000 tons; H-beams by 23,000 tons to 226,000 tons; tubular products by 17,000 tons to 407,000 tons; rails by 13,000 tons to 46,000 tons; and ordinary wire rods by 10,000 tons to 38,000 tons.

By contrast, no item of ordinary steel products except small bars increased in stock by 10,000 tons or more from a month ago. Small bars rose by 23,000 tons to 570,000 tons.

Ordinary steel shipments out of steelworks totaled 6,190,000 tons in September 2009, down 1,013,000 tons or 14.1% from a year ago, hitting a level of 6,000,000 tons for the first time in 11 months since October 2008. Of the total, domestic shipments accounted for 3,816,000 tons, down 1,238,000 tons or 24.5% from a year ago, while export shipments made up 2,374,000 tons, up 226,000 tons or 10.5%.

Meanwhile, Japan's nationwide manufacture of ordinary steel products totaled 5,933,000 tons in September 2009, down 1,262,000 tons or 17.5% from a year ago.
