Japan's Sept Scrap Exports Total 657,000 Tons
Jan-Sept Cumulative Exports Hit 7,803,000 Tons

Japan's ferrous scrap exports totaled 657,000 tons in September 2009, up 40.0% from a year ago, but they decreased by 10.1% from a month ago, a fall for four consecutive months, standing at the second lowest level this year after the lowest one in January, according to announced customs statistics from the Ministry of Finance.

Of the total, South Korea took the largest quantity of 341,000 tons, and China the second largest of 302,000 tons. As a result, South Korea replaced China as the largest destination for the first time in four months.

In January-September 2009, Japan's ferrous scrap exports totaled 7,803,000 tons, up 75.8% from the same period of 2008, topping a record 7,650,000 tons in calendar 2006, when they translated into an annualized level of 10,400,000 tons.

In the breakdown by main destinations, China ranked first at 4,231,0000 tons or 54.2% of the total, up 122.0% from the same period of 2008; and South Korea second at 3,013,000 tons or 38.6%, up 37.6%. As a result, the two nations together accounted for 92.8% of the total.
