Domestic Consumption Of Nickel Metal In Japan For Jan. - Sep. / 09 Decreased By 40%
According to the steel statistics compiled and released on the end of last week by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the quantities of nickel metal consumed by Japan in January - September of 2009 as well as in a single month of September were as per the table shown below.

Namely, Japan consumed 3,282.2 tons of nickel metal in a single month of September and also consumed 24,133.4 tons of nickel metal in the first 9 months (January - September) of 2009, which had a considerable decrease of 40.2% compared with that (40,329.1 tons) in the same period of 2008.

Particularly, the consumption of nickel metal at special steel companies of Japan in January - September of 2009 decreased by 41.0% to 18,479.8 tons in comparison with that (31,321.8 tons) in the same period of 2008. Reflecting a substantial reduction in automobile manufacturing, the production of special steels (including stainless steel) to be used by the automobile industry of Japan has been driven to decrease to a large extent.

The quantities of nickel metal consumed in Japan by each quarter of 2009 were <> January - March quarter : 5,920.7 tons, <> April - June quarter : 8,164.6 tons and <> July - September quarter : 10,048.2 tons, having indicated a basic tone to recover. Japan consumed 10,048.2 tons of nickel metal in July - September of 2009 as mentioned above, which decreased by 21.9% compared to that (12,859.2 tons) in the same quarter of 2008 but had an improvement of the extent to decrease nickel consumption. In view of the tendency which Japan is anticipated to increase further the quantities of special steel and stainless steel to be produced in October - December quarter, the consumption of nickel metal in Japan for the quarter is expected to increase.

However, the parties concerned have an opinion that, until domestic consumption of nickel metal in Japan recovers completely, part of nickel producers in Japan will still endeavor to continue their exports of nickel metal, ferro-nickel and processed nickel products.
