China's Nov09 Steel Imports Total 1.59M Tons
= Jan-Nov09 Imports Up 41.4% To 20.63M Tons
China's imports of steel products including semis totaled 1,593,000 tons in November 2009, in which import volumes increased from a month ago for items such as bars and electrical sheets, but they decreased from a month ago for main sheet products like HR sheets and CR sheets, according to a survey by the Japan Iron & Steel Federation.

In January-November 2009, China's imports of steel products including semis totaled 20,630,000 tons, up 41.4% from the same period of 2008, hitting a level of 20 million tons for the first time in four years since 2005, according to the same survey by the JISF.

The following are the findings of the JISF survey.

<>Of the main products imported in November 2009, CR sheets accounted for 398,000 tons, down 11.2% from a month ago; galvanized sheets 239,000 tons, down 8.8%; HR coils 116,000 tons, down 37.3%; other coated sheets except tinplate 79,000 tons, up 29.5%; heavy/medium plates 62,000 tons, down 3.1%; bars 50,000 tons, up 25%; wire rods 43,000 tons, no change; pipes 38,000 tons, up 2.7%; shapes 15,000 tons, down 11.8%; tinplate 10,000 tons, no change; and steel ingots/semis 306,000 tons, down 7.6%.

<>In the breakdown by main sources for November 2009, Japan accounted for 526,000 tons, down 9.3% from a month ago; South Korea 307,000 tons, down 16.1%; Taiwan 175,000 tons, down 9.8%; the EU15 nations 83,000 tons, up 12.2%; the USA 20,000 tons, up 11.1%; Brazil 110,000 tons, down 34.9%; Russia 172,000 tons, down 25%; and Ukraine 103,000 tons, up by a factor of 3.

<>Of the main products imported in January-November 2009, CR sheets accounted for 4,158,000 tons, up 25.7% from the corresponding period of 2008; HR coils 3,458,000 tons, up by a factor of 3.5; galvanized sheets 2,325,000 tons, down 26.1%; heavy/medium plates 876,000 tons, up 4.9%; electrical sheets 746,000 tons, down 23.4%; wire rods 445,000 tons, down 9%; bars 316,000 tons, down 24%; tinplate 109,000 tons, down 32.8%; and steel ingots/semis 4,553,000 tons, up by a factor of 26.

<>In the breakdown by main sources for January-November 2009, Japan accounted for 5,691,000 tons, down 14.3% from the corresponding period of 2008; South Korea 4,385,000 tons, up 31.3%; Taiwan 2,533,000 tons, up 7.0%; the EU15 nations 837,000 tons, down 19.1%, in which Germany supplied 372,000 tons, down 15.4%; North America 196,000 tons, down 2.6%; and Brazil 1,008,000 tons, up by factor of 3 plus.
