Japan's crude steel production totaled 8,951,000 tons in December 2009, up 93,000 tons or 1.1% from a month ago (up 19.6% from a year ago), hitting a level of 8,000,000 tons for five consecutive months, when it indicated a year-on-year increase for two consecutive months, according to the Japan Iron & Steel Federation. As a result, Japanese crude steel production totaled 87,534,000 tons in calendar 2009, down 31,205,000 tons or 26.3% from calendar 2008, falling short of 90 million tons for the first time in 38 years since 88,557,000 tons in calendar 1971. It also stood at a low level since 82,166,000 tons in calendar 1969. The following are details. <>Crude Steel: Production totaled 26,609,000 tons in October-December 2009, up 0.8% from the same period of 2008. Production totaled 87,534,000 tons in calendar 2009, down 31,205,000 tons or 26.3% from a year ago. <>Breakdown: Of crude steel production in December 2009, LD converters accounted for 7,260,000 tons, up 3.1% from a year ago (up 22.9% from a year ago). Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) made up 1,691,000 tons, down 6.85 from a month ago (up 7.3% from a year ago). For calendar 2009, LD converters produced 68,337,000 tons, down 23.4% from a year ago, while EAFs brought 19,197,000 tons, down 34.9%. <>Blast Furnace Pig Iron: Production totaled 6,844,000 tons in December 2009, up 184,000 tons or 2.8% from a year ago (up 11.9% from a year ago). Production totaled 20,118,000 tons in October-December 2009, up 0.9% from the same period of 2008. Production totaled 66,943,000 tons in calendar 2009, down 19,229,000 tons or 22.3% from a year ago. <>HR Steel Products: Production totaled 7,822,000 tons in December 2009, up 114,000 tons or 1.5% from a month ago (up 24.5% from a year ago). Of the total, ordinary steel products accounted for 6,257,000 tons, up 81,000 tons or 1.3% from a month ago (up 25.6% from a year ago), and specialty steel products 1,564,000 tons, up 33,000 tons or 2.2% (up 20.2%). In calendar 2009, production totaled 76,735,000 tons, down 29,347,000 tons or 27.7% from a year ago. |
