Increased Exports Of Chinese Molybdenum Are Causing To Improve Rapidly Trade Balance In China
= Transformed The Balance To Export : 1 Against Import : 1.8
The exports of molybdenum from China are suddenly increasing from the beginning of 2010. Consequently, the trade balance on molybdenum in China for January - April of 2010 has transformed its composition to export of 1 against import of 1.83. China is originally the country to export molybdenum on net quantity but, owing to the facts that the Central Government of China purchased molybdenum for stockpiles and the international prices of molybdenum products fell considerably, the exports of Chinese molybdenum in 2009 decreased to a large extent and, contrarily, the imports increased. This change on trade of molybdenum caused to have transformed China to the country to import molybdenum on net quantity as the first case in its history.

However, the international prices of molybdenum products have turned to rise and, accordingly, prices of Chinese molybdenum products have regained the power to be competitive in the international market. As a matter of fact, China exported 9.48 million lbs. on Mo content base (8,031.9 tons on material base) of molybdenum products in January - April of 2010, which had a remarkable increase of 3.4 times compared with that in the same period of 2009.

On the other hand, the imports of molybdenum by China in the first 4 months of 2010 decreased largely compared to that in the same period of 2009. According to the customs-statistics released in China, this country imported 17.04 million lbs. on Mo content base (14,722.3 tons on material base) of molybdenum in January - April of 2010, having decreased by 13.3% compared with that in the same period of 2009. In view of the fact that, in order to secure molybdenum as raw material, leading steel companies in China have concluded the yearly contracts with such major molybdenum mines as Codelco to import molybdenum for shipments in 2010 and, therefore, the total quantity of molybdenum to be imported by China in 2010 will be unable to decrease to a substantial extent but is also supposed to be difficult to return to the scale as seen in 2009.

The imports of molybdenum by China raged overwhelmingly in 2009 but, according to an analysis of the imports, China imported 40.5 million lbs. of Mo on content base in the first half (January - June) of 2009 and 35.0 million lbs. of Mo on content base in the second half (July - December) respectively. Since the international prices of molybdenum products already rebounded in the second half of 2009, the imports of molybdenum into China in that period showed a trend to tone down. On the basis of the quantity imported by China in January - April of 2010, it is anticipated that China is thought to import 25.5 million lbs. on content base of molybdenum in the first half of 2010 by a decline from that in the second half of 2009.

On the other hand, according to the official statistics released in China, this country produced 200 million lbs. on content base of molybdenum in the calender year of 2009, having had an increase of 20% from that in 2008. However, the statistics were involved in the duplicated data as submitted by molybdenum mines in China and the disunited quality of molybdenum and, therefore, these figures are presumed to have actually included opaque parts. Domestic molybdenum mines in China have an opinion that the real quantity of molybdenum produced in China in 2009 would be a decrease of 10% from that in 2008.

Nevertheless, China imported molybdenum on an extraordinary scale in 2009 and a large quantity of molybdenum imported in that year has been left in the domestic market as an excessive stock. Accordingly, the stocked molybdenum has a possibility to become a factor to reduce the imports in 2010 or to become a power to export molybdenum from China. The quantity of molybdenum consumed by China has shared 35% of the world consumption. The movements to import molybdenum into China or to export molybdenum from China are an important key to forecast the international prices of molybdenum products in the second half of 2010.

The reason is that the world situation on supply of molybdenum in 2010 is estimated to be a short supply on a macro base, and a key point to fluctuate prices of molybdenum products in the international market is subject to the movements to trade molybdenum by China, where is a large country to consume and to produce molybdenum. It is anticipated that, when the international price of molybdenum oxide rises to a level of US$20 per lb. of Mo, China will increase their export of molybdenum and, when the oxide price falls to a lower level than US$15 per lb. of Mo, China will turn to increase their imports of molybdenum.

The quantities of molybdenum exported and imported by China in January - April of 2010 were as per the table shown below ;
